Lights and magic

There’s something fascinating about fireworks. And it’s not just the fact that it’s breathtakingly beautiful. There is something eerily magical about the way people forget everything and turn their faces upward, and for those brief moments, become more innocent versions of themselves. Every year, in Vancouver, there is the Celebration of Lights, an international pyrotechnic festival. On Wednesday night, I had the opportunity to sit in a rooftop lounge with panoramic views of Vancouver’s downtown and English Bay, the perfect place to let dusk settle gently and have my senses reawakened by the fireworks. The Spanish team took to the stage, and I tried my best to capture the sparks in the night sky with my camera. Of course, the shots were disappointing, and, after several attempts, I gave up, and allowed myself to become completely absorbed in the show. Truly, toward the end, as the music grew ever more dramatic in a heartstring-tugging crescendo, nothing else existed for me except those bursts of fire and light. Ever need something to remind you that there’s good in the world? Let us have fireworks, I tell you….
