To my favourite person

Dear Favourite Person,

I’m finally up and about after enduring four days of pounding headaches and stomach troubles. Thank you for cheering me up while I was in bed feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for helping me find what I was looking for, even though I never even asked. Thank you for the gift. You called it my belated Christmas present, even though I know it’s a “just because” gift. You make me feel special, as though I matter and deserve all the little kindnesses showered upon me.

How is it that you remember so many of the trivial things that I’ve said through the years? How is it that you are so confident that I’ll be all right, that everything will work out in my favour? You’ve saved me in so many ways: I’ll never forget the toast you delivered to me, when that was all I could get into my system. You always seem to know exactly when I need a spontaneous trip to my favourite dessert place, or when I just need a small squeeze in the shoulder and an understanding look. Sometimes, I see my sadness reflected in you. Do you see yourself in me too? Is that how you could read me so well?

Thank you for the poem, the food, the games, the experiences, the stories, the love.

Love,
Me

  1. Oh I hope you delivered that to the person you were writing to. What a wonderful thank you note. It tells me to remember to do the things that I might think are small things but to someone else they may be appreciated, and just what that person needs. I had a dream last night that I was visiting you in Inuvik. I was so disappointed when I woke up that I was not visiting you.
